I was introduced to Blues in June of 2005, shortly after returning from a trip abroad. I had been dancing Lindy for two years already, and going out to Blues Underground in Seattle seemed like the next logical step. I remember my first few dances were tense, rigid, and very un-musical. Basically, they sucked. I was slowly drawn into the blues community, first at a few of the legendary Roosevelt House parties, then at the Emerald City Blues Festival. As I danced more and more blues, I began to connect with the blues people, not just on the dance floor but off it as well. I began to learn that 95% of the blues dancing community is friendly, respectful, generous, and caring. This was something that I wanted to be a part of.
As I've become a bigger part of the Seattle scene, I've also noticed that the blues dancing scenes are very fragmented. Seattle is separate, and different, from Portland and Vancouver, even though the cities are fairly close together. And even though I know almost everything that's going on in Seattle, I don't know anything in areas outside that. So I set out to solve the problem of how to provide the information needed to create a cohesive national and international blues community in the best possible format.
So I took a look around, and realized that what was needed was a single place for people to come and easily information about all the exchanges, workshops, parties, dances, and communities where blues lives. This lead me to create BluesDance.org, as a place where all that information could be gathered and disseminated.
If you'd like to get your event listed on DanceBlues.org, just send me the details for it via the form below. I'll do all the work to list it and make it look pretty. You should include the name of your event, start and end dates, location, a web page link, and a description of your event. If you're starting a local scene and need a web presence, you can also use your community page as a starting point.
The success of this site depends on you, the dancers. If you've got a blues event site and are able to link back to this site, please help me out by including a simple link on your site. This will help increase exposure of DanceBlues.org, which means that events and communities here will get more exposure as well. That's more people looking at your event, and more people coming out to dance. Warm fuzzies all around.
